Brighton & Hove is about to see one of the UK’s most ambitious expansions of electric vehicle infrastructure, starting with over 6,000 new lamppost charge points delivered by char.gy.

We’re proud to announce that char.gy has been awarded Lot 1 of Brighton & Hove City Council’s new EV infrastructure contract, with more than 1,800 charge points set to be installed over the next three years, and 6,133 in total over the lifetime of the contract.

This partnership is a major milestone in the city’s journey to net zero and a bold step toward making on-street EV charging more accessible, reliable, and sustainable.

What’s included in the rollout?

The full programme, supported by £2.8 million from the Department for Transport’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, will see three separate contracts awarded, including:

Lot 1 – char.gy

  • 6,133 lamppost charge points to be delivered

  • 1,800 in the first three years

  • Day & night tariffs

  • Dedicated local Service Engineers

  • Backed by LEVI funding

What they’re saying

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet Member for Transport and City Infrastructure at Brighton & Hove City Council, said:

“Brighton & Hove is already one of the leading cities for electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and these new contracts will see us lead the way for the future of public EV charging. It’s vital we stay ahead of the growing demand so that residents, businesses and visitors can be confident they’ll find a charge point nearby.”

“The Department for Transport’s LEVI funding, alongside our own investment, will play a crucial role in helping us reach our net zero goals.”

John Lewis, CEO of char.gy, added:

“Char.gy is delighted to partner with Brighton & Hove City Council on this transformational contract. We’re excited to deliver a reliable, accessible and sustainable charging network that works for the whole community.”

“By expanding lamppost charging at scale, we’re making EV ownership possible for people without driveways—helping to accelerate the switch to clean transport and support the city’s greener future.”

Future of Roads Minister, Lilian Greenwood, said:

“It’s fantastic to see Brighton & Hove confirm the delivery of more than 6,000 lamppost charge points, backed by our LEVI funding. This is part of our £4bn Plan for Change—helping drivers switch to electric, creating jobs, and putting money back in people’s pockets.”

Why this matters

Brighton & Hove is already recognised as a trailblazer in public EV charging. With this expanded network, the city is setting a national benchmark for what inclusive, future-ready infrastructure can look like.

At char.gy, we’re proud to support that vision, bringing convenient, on-street charging to the people who need it most.
